I nomi delle strade Brandhoutkaai, Baksteenkaai e più avanti Steenkoolkaai, Schuitenkaai… si riferiscono al vecchio porto interno di Bruxelles. Dopo l'interramento di questo Koopliedendok, qui è stata presente una grande pescheria coperta dal 1885 al 1955. Da qui il fatto che questa piazza sia ancora chiamata 'la Vismet' dal popolo. I ristoranti con astici al neon e le vasche con zampilli d'acqua sono un omaggio a un passato scomparso.
Questo quartiere è fiorito negli ultimi anni, con innumerevoli caffè, ristoranti, un'eco-supermercato e cioccolatieri. Per i gelati molto popolari di Gaston devi ancora camminare fino alla Fontana Anspach. In bella stagione c'è una lunga coda, ma la pazienza viene ripagata!
Sotto la piazza si trova la fermata della metropolitana Sint-Katelijne, a due fermate dalla Stazione Centrale. A piedi ci vogliono circa un quarto d'ora.
