Les rues Brandhoutkaai, Baksteenkaai et plus loin Steenkoolkaai, Schuitenkaai… font référence à l'ancien port intérieur de Bruxelles. Après le comblement de ce Koopliedendok, une grande halle aux poissons couverte a été construite ici de 1885 à 1955. C'est pourquoi cette place est encore communément appelée « la Vismet ». Les restaurants avec des homards au néon et les bassins avec des jets d'eau sont un clin d'œil au passé disparu.
Ce quartier a complètement revécu ces dernières années, avec de nombreux cafés, restaurants, un supermarché bio et des chocolatiers. Pour les célèbres glaces de Gaston, il faut encore marcher un peu jusqu'à la fontaine Anspach. Par beau temps, il y a une longue file, mais la patience est récompensée !
Sous la place se trouve la station de métro Sint-Katelijne, à deux arrêts de la Gare Centrale. À pied, cela prend un quart d'heure pour y arriver.
