The abelen and the aspen

Source: Gert Arijs

Description

On the way to junction 96 you first walk past two rows of impressive Canadian poplars. Once you have passed it you will see some trees on the other side of the Dender with a very pale trunk. They are abelians: white abeles or grey abeles. From here it is difficult to see: the two are very similar, since the gray abalone is a natural cross between the white abalone and the aspen poplar. The white abalone originates from southern and central Europe and has white felted leaves. The aspen (synonym: vibrating poplar) is a native species with round leaves and a corrugated leaf margin. The three species are known for their root storage: from the roots of one specimen, new trees can emerge a little further away. In this way, a whole bunch can arise from one individual!
