Viewpoint on Albert Canal and Kanne
The Albert Canal (French: Canal Albert) is a canal in Belgium that connects Liège with Antwerp via cities such as Genk, Hasselt, Geel and Herentals, and the Meuse with the Scheldt. In Flanders, De Vlaamse Waterweg nv manages the canal, in Wallonia the Autonomous Port of Liège. The canal takes its name from King Albert I and runs through three provinces, namely Liège, Limburg and Antwerp.
As far as Ternaaien, the Albert Canal runs parallel to the Meuse. There it turns to the west, to bypass Maastricht. As a result, the canal had to cut through the Caestert Plateau and the Cannerberg. The Kempens Plateau also had to be crossed (Briegden-Berenbroek). On this part is the watershed line between the river basins of Maas and Scheldt (Eigenbilzen). The canal remains on the west side of the Kempens Plateau, before descending 30 m to Hasselt. There it enters flat terrain and runs, in straight lines and with a slow descent, further to the Scheldt.
