The Donkmeer Reserve Zone is part of a larger area that has long been known to tourists, gourmets, hikers, artists, biologists and historians. Large shallow water features, created by peat mining, determine the appearance of the Donkmeer. Vzw Durme is responsible for the management of this nature reserve, and regularly organizes activities here.
In the reserve zone, old swamp forests that are home to colonies of the cormorant and grey heron, beautiful peat pits, peat grasslands, reed beds, sedge vegetation, drift sheds and a historic duck decoy, alternate.
