The old town hall of Turnhout, which served both as a cloth hall and meat hall, as well as a council chamber for municipal administration and court, was a freestanding building on the southern side of the market, located along the axis of Herentalsstraat. At least dating back to the 14th century, it was repeatedly ravaged by fire, including in 1716, after which it was rebuilt in a classical style; in 1936 it was protected as a monument but was demolished in 1962 for "traffic technical" reasons after the construction of the current town hall.
