The Hoogpoort was the first connecting street between the Scheldt and the Leie. Independent residential communities emerged along both rivers from the 9th century, more or less at the same time, and they grew towards each other. In Van Eyck's time, there was considerable activity in the Hoogpoort. Here, especially wealthy merchants lived. Their properties were located on this street and in the nearby area. Some were inhabited, but often these were just storage places for goods and a signboard for the owners.
