Berkenbos is a hamlet and a parish of the Belgian municipality of Heusden-Zolder. Before the mergers of 1977, Berkenbos was part of the municipality of Heusden. Berkenbos had 2,520 inhabitants at the beginning of 2008.
In the 19th-century Atlas der Buurtwegen and Vandermaelen maps, Berkenbos is not yet mentioned as a hamlet. Berkenbos saw its significant expansion with the establishment of the Zolder Coal Mine in the adjacent hamlet of Voort. The establishment of the coal mine began in 1907, and operations started in 1930.
