More than 100 sources in Brussels !
In the course of the 19th century, the Maelbeek was vaulted along its entire length, partly because of the poor quality of the water. After all, it was polluted by the sewers that discharged the waste water of the inhabitants of the valley into the Maelbeek. On the domain of the former Cistercian abbey of Our Lady of the Cambre, behind the church, there is a rectangular pond - the so-called Duck Pond - which is still fed by the source of the Maelbeek. In the past, spring water from the nearby Bois de la Cambre was led to the abbey to brew beer. For centuries, this was served by the nuns to the guests and pilgrims who were passing through. Nowadays, a blond and a brown beer are brewed again, named after Dame Gisèle, the foundress of the abbey. However, the water used for this no longer comes from the springs on the abbey site.
