Like all Brussels parks created in the same period (Parmentier, Mellaerts, ...), Woluwepark is a landscape park with numerous perspectives, a rolling landscape, large grassy areas planted with trees, winding paths that follow the terrain's relief, and rock formations that imitate cliffs, caves, or waterfalls. The 4 ponds (Bemel, Lang, Rond, and Denis) are home to a rich and varied fauna and flora. The Bemel pond, for example, is a favored breeding ground for amphibians, especially toads. The Bemelbeek feeds the two ponds along Tervurenlaan, the Bemel pond and the Lang pond. The Rond pond and the Denis pond, on the other hand, are both fed by springs. The Woluwe serves as an outlet for the four ponds. After flowing beneath the old railway bed, via two arms that reconnect at the base of a waterfall, it runs alongside Tervurenlaan, behind the Rond pond, before crossing beneath an overpass to emerge behind the tram museum, on Bovenbergstraat. The park has been managed ecologically since the 1990s, respecting the principles of differentiated management (e.g., creation of hay fields, ...). It was also in the early 1990s that the banks were completely reconstructed. The dam walls in azobé have been reinforced with gabions seeded with aquatic plants, while the banks of the islands have been designed to attract birds. The approach in choosing the plants was particularly innovative for that time: the selection of plant species took their natural living conditions into account. |
