Many walkers have puzzled over the name of the Pond of the Drowned Children, which follows on from the Hoefijzervijver. In the 18th century, a legend is said to have emerged that tells the story of the three sons of a woodcutter who supposedly drowned on the same day. In reality, the name does not refer to a drowning at all, but to the children of a miller and their surname, ‘Verdroncken’.
