In the past, there were common meadows in the area 'De Grote Beemd' where Wellen residents could let their cattle graze for a fee after the plots had been hayed. Afterwards, the area was planted with poplars. Limburgs Landschap is now trying to restore the area in collaboration with local farmers and hunters. The swampy area has a lot of local plants and trees.
