This area is named after the 18th-century fish farming pond of the Schuilens family. Due to drainage, this pond disappeared, and intensive agriculture became possible. Since 2011, Schuilenswijer has undergone a genuine makeover. The natural relief with pools and fens has been restored. The natural transition from wet to dry areas is crucial for the bird, butterfly, and dragonfly species that were once typical of this region. In early summer, Natuurpunt mows the drier grasslands, and in late summer, cattle graze there.
This area forms an important stepping stone between the heathlands in Dutch Brabant and the heathlands in the Limburg Northern Kempen. Meanwhile, no less than 76 species of birds, 32 species of dragonflies, and 30 species of butterflies have been observed!
