Willem (Guillaume) D'hanens (1819) was one of the founders and main shareholders of the Mechelen-Terneuzen railway (MT). He was also a lawyer and alderman in Sint-Niklaas and as a landowner closely involved in the polder administration. He must have had the habit of travelling by train to Sint-Gillis-Waas or De Klinge several times a week to make inspection rounds. On 9 February 1888 he was killed at de Klinge station. His family placed a memorial cross at the station.
