PICNIC SPOT ~ Defensive Dike / Half Moon

This dike with a defensive redoubt was part of the Brialmont defence line on the left bank and, together with the fort of Zwijndrecht, formed the final piece between the Scheldt forts of Kruibeke (at the bottom of the Scheldt bend) and Kallo (north of Antwerp). Today, this is a piece of protected landscape, with rare plants and animals that have developed their habitat there. The brick remnants of the redoubt walls of the Halve Maan Schans are still clearly visible. In 1923, the municipal and provincial boundaries were redrawn in order to be able to expand the port activities of the Scheldt on the left bank. In this way, the current municipal boundary of Zwijndrecht was drawn right on the line between the forts and redoubts. So you literally cycle and picnic on the municipal border between Zwijndrecht and Beveren.
