This bridge is historically unique, it is the last Bailey bridge in Limburg (source: Teutenroute, a publication of Toerisme Limburg vzw).
A Bailey bridge is a bridge that consists of standard segments and as such can be built very quickly. The basis of the design is a truss bridge. This type of bridge was initially designed for application by army engineers and can freely span up to 60 meters and carry heavy vehicles. This type of bridge is still in use for military and civilian applications and is considered a fine example of military engineering worldwide (source: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baileybrug).
