This street used to be part of the longer Marollenstraat (which gave its name to the entire neighborhood).
When in 1875 that street was divided in two by the construction of the new Palace of Justice, a new street was created. It was named after the Spanish madonna of Monserrat (ebru, n.d.). In the past, there was also a chapel in this street in honor of Our Lady of Monserrat. Unfortunately, this has disappeared over the course of the 20th century.
On the route, one follows Monserratstraat from the back of the Palace of Justice towards the Kleine Ring (R20).
