The Heysel Plateau was not the only site in the city to undergo major modifications for the World Expos in the 20th century. Extensive works also took place in the Mont des Arts district in the 1950s. The Brussels Convention Centre, which was designed by Jules Ghobert and Maurice Hoyoux, was inaugurated for the 1958 World Expo. It consisted of several underground spaces, two auditoriums and an exhibition hall. The discovery of asbestos in the late 1990s forced it to close temporarily and prompted the start of the restoration and expansion works in 2005. It reopened its doors in 2009, when it was renamed Square - Brussels Convention Centre.
