Spanning an area of more than 100,000 hectares, of which more than half is covered by forests, the Great Forest of Saint-Hubert extends up to here.
This is an opportunity to remember the origin of this name. We are in 683. In the vast Ardennes forest, a young hunter, Hubert, ventures silently. Suddenly, he spots a large stag. Pointing his bow, he sees, between the antlers of the deer, a luminous cross. A revelation that will lead this idle man from the court of the Lazy Kings to convert. Healer of rabies, he is named the patron saint by hunters. The legend is born, but the reality was somewhat different... In the 7th century, Hubert was an evangelizer in a region where Christianity struggled to penetrate the dark massif. Having become the first bishop of Liège, Saint-Hubert died in 727. His remains were transferred to the heart of the Ardennes, on the desolate plateau of Andage. Benedictine monks settled there and founded an abbey, one of the oldest and most illustrious in Western Europe: the cult of Saint-Hubert is born and will bear the name of the new city.
