The name of the village Fumal is first mentioned in the 12th century. Part of the territory belonged to the Prince-Bishopric of Liège during the ancien régime, while another part belonged to the County of Namur. The inhabitants of the castle were serfs to the County of Namur. By the end of the 17th century, the castle had suffered greatly from the many wars that plagued the region. In the early 18th century, a severe fire broke out. Jacques Mincé du Fontbaré rebuilt the castle. His descendants still live on the estate.
