The Solvay Obelisk, 36m high (including the sun), was commissioned by Mr. Alfred Vandercam, entrepreneur in Ohain, based on the idea of Mr. Ernest-John Solvay. The construction started in 1968 lasted a year. The obelisk was completed in early 1969.
The sun was chosen by Mr. Solvay on presentation of different calibers made of triplex. It was forged by Monsieur Bonaventure, an artistic blacksmith in Lasne-Chapelle Saint-Lambert. It is 4.50m in diameter, consists of 16 flames and has received a special tempering which protects it from bad weather. This sun and the obelisk are oriented to the west of the castle and thus reflect the light of the rising sun for the occupants of the west facade of the castle.
