About artist Georges Staes:
Born on August 22, 1927 and died on February 16, 2017.
Georges Staes was educated in Antwerp at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts with J. Hendrickx and at the National Higher Institute with Van Vlasselaer. The latter introduced him to the laws of architecture andpointed out the possibilities for monumental art.
G. Staes was mainly active as a draughtsman, glazier and sculptor. He taught Monumental and Applied Arts at the Municipal Academy of Sint-Niklaas and at the National Higher Institute in Antwerp. He has received several awards, including the Prize of the Province of East Flanders. He was able to combine technical knowledge with artistic creativity in a unique way. He was looking for the perfect balance between form and expression.
In Beveren, the work of Georges Staes can be found mainly in private homes and in public spaces, elsewhere in churches and public buildings, such as in the town hall of Sint-Niklaas. In 1953, together with architect M. Van De Vijver, he realized the O.L.V. chapel on the Kruibekesteenweg. Georges Staes was a modest man who did not exhibit, with one exception: the exhibition Paintings in Glass and Stone in Cortewalle Castle that the Ter Vesten cultural centre organised in 2009 as a tribute to this versatile and underappreciated artist.
