Despite the fact that limestone is no longer extracted in Quarry Kanne, this is one of the most active quarries today. Guided tours have been given here since 1954, as it is one of the most beautiful quarries to visit.
Some tunnels are more than eight meters high or actually deep, because the limestone was quarried 'down'. This sixteen-kilometre-long tunnel system is made entirely by hand: no explosives, no machines.
With a block saw, punch chisel and pickaxe, the limestone was cut out of the quarry block by block. For lovers of fossils, Quarry Kanne is also an interesting place.
There is an underground fossil museum with murals of prehistoric animals, fossils of sea urchins, fish, and other former inhabitants of the prehistoric Cretaceous Sea.
You can admire the skull of a real Mosasaurus, although not found in Kanne, but they did occur here. Apart from the fact that Quarry Kanne is one of the most beautiful quarries, it is also one of the tastiest.
As in many other quarries, the so-called 'cave mushrooms' were grown here. This is still done in this quarry in the same way as it was then. In addition to cave mushrooms, it is also a place to taste cave beer, cave wine, and cave cheese.
