This former monastery has been transformed into a unique and beautiful hotel called "La Merveilleuse" and is also a beer museum
Not only does it offer you stunning views across the Meuse Valley, but it also introduces you to the rich character and deep roots of this exceptional abbey beer.
The history of Leffe has its origins in Notre-Dame de Leffe, an abbey founded in 1152 by Norbertine canons .
Like the monks, the Premonstratensians lived in community and according to certain rules. However, Canons have a very open view of the world and like to relate to the people around them. Therefore, from the foundation of the monastery, the Premonstratensians were known for the special attention they paid to the reception of guests and pilgrims.
The door was always open to the many pilgrims who passed through the abbey... but not only that.
From 1240 the canons brewed beer in Leffe . Guests and passers-by could quench their thirst with a healthy and refreshing drink. It was also a difficult time: the numerous plagues that ravaged European territory at the time made drinking water unsafe. Luckily, an ideal solution emerged: brewing beer. During the brewing process, the boiling temperature kills the microbes, making the beer drinkable. The quality of the water has greatly improved over the centuries, but the beer has stayed, even among the Norbertines of Leffe.
In 1952 Father-Abbot Nys and brewer Albert Lootvoet decided to revive the abbey 's brewing tradition. Over the years a wide range of Leffe beers has been born and served to beer lovers.
Today, AB-InBev takes on this task to continue the tradition of Leffe beer, brewed with great passion since 1240 .
Particular attention was also paid to the glass (chalice) . At the foot of the chalice you will find a decoration in relief reminiscent of the abbey: you can touch the history of Leffe with your hand. In addition, by holding the glass by the base, you avoid heating your Leffe and keep it at the right temperature.
The letter "L" engraved on the bottom of the glass favors the continuous formation of air bubbles and allows obtaining a persistent foam. Take the time to enjoy this moment. Discovering your Leffe in sips is a pleasure: the round shape and the narrow neck of the glass allow you to savor its unique scent. To taste it at its best, you need to let the beer breathe to release its aromas
