Description

The Capybara hiking trail runs from the boat house in Beernem (near the pleasure harbour) to the old barracks (todays thrift shop and container park. Several references refer to 2003. It is not clear how/why this hiking trail was created, but it is certain that it was in 2003 three Capybaras had escaped and were found along the canal between Aalter and Beernem.Capybaras are giant guinea pigs, herbivorous swamp animals that occur in Venezuela.It is forbidden to import the animal species, but Eric Deschuyter had those animals for much longer, even before the legislation on that.

This piece of hiking and MTB path is located along the canal.
