The devil's stone in the Park of Heaven

Description

The freshwater quartzite was found by chance during the excavation of a cellar in Bilzen. At the suggestion of the municipality of Kortessem, the devil's stone was given a place in the Hemelspark.
This rock-hard pale boulder of about 15 tons, is made entirely of pure quartz, and was formed millions of years ago by sealing the grains together in a white layer of sand. Later, the rest of the sand was washed away by erosion and the stone remained. That is why the devil's stone of the Hemelspark is also called a relict or witness stone of a disappeared geological deposit.
