The monument at the farm Paul Bekaert was erected in memory of the three crew members of Halifax III LW583 from No. 432 Squadron RAF, who lost their lives here during the night of May 8 to 9, 1944.
The aircraft was returning that night from a raid on Haine-Saint-Pierre, a hamlet of La Louvière. However, on the way back, the Halifax was intercepted by Messerschmitt 110s of the IV./NJG 1 operating from Sint-Truiden airfield.
It was the Knight's Cross holder Hauptmann Georg Hermann Greiner who delivered the fatal shot to the bomber over Wevelgem. The monument was unveiled on November 10, 2002.
