Durbuy is located in Belgian Luxembourg, in the heart of the Ardennes in Belgium, on the Ourthe. Its round shape reveals that the river completely surrounded it under the old bridge, the Place des Faires and along the saddle up to the current bed of the Ourthe .
Durbuy was originally an island , well protected by the water, the castle and the ramparts that were 550 meters long and more than 6 meters high. The construction of this wall was linked to the 1314 Charter of Freedom signed by John the Blind, Count of Luxembourg and King of Bohemia. This charter, which sets out the rights and duties of the city of Durbuy, states, among other things, that the citizens themselves had to ensure the safety and justice of their city, which was an important trading center at the time.
