In the 17th century , Laurent de Jeune, dean of a collegiate church in Maastricht, received permission from Philip IV to found a monastery of Friars Minor in Durbuy in his father's old house. A monastery church was built in 1630 , but it was not dedicated to John the Baptist until 1642.
In 1766 the church was expanded to include a large choir. After the dissolution of the monastery in 1795, the church was allocated to the parish of Durbuy in 1810 (possibly 1802), as the parish church had fallen into serious disrepair. With this move the church of Sant Nicolau was consecrated .
