With the Archeo Route Limburg you will discover the stories behind Limburg's history and archaeology. The most important places of this route are marked with a work of art in the shape of a spear.
Cross-border history in Maastricht and Lanaken: the gigantic Fort aan de Zouw stretched across the territory in both the Netherlands and Belgium.
The traces of the military fort on the Roman road northwest of Maastricht tell of a defensive structure of which the excavated side alone measures approximately 155 meters.
The fortress dates back to about the year 700, when Charles Martel held sway. Two generations later, his famous grandson Charlemagne ruled this area as emperor.
Location: The location is just on Belgian territory. Via Flanders/Belgium, you can reach the site via the cycle path that runs between the Van Akenweg (in the north) and the 2nd Carabinierslaan (in the south).
Via the Netherlands you can reach the site via the Cijnsruwe and the Kleine Weg; these streets are located in the Malberg district, on the territory of Maastricht.
