The two new breakwaters were designed to withstand a storm that statistically hits our coast every 1,000 years . This significantly increased protection.
The new eastern breakwater, which protrudes 600 meters into the sea , together with the western dam, delimits the new harbor entrance.
Vessels up to 200 meters in length can now enter and exit the port smoothly and safely. The usable sand that was made available when the new road was built was used to defend the coast and to implement natural balances.
A new radar tower was also erected at the top of the Oostdamm to replace the existing tower, which is due to disappear when the harbor channel is widened. This is one of 21 unmanned radar towers in addition to the 5 manned in the current Scheldt Radar Chain (SRK). This Scheldt Radar Chain (SRK) was built in cooperation with the Netherlands. It provides "Vessel Transit Services" for vessels to ensure safe and hassle-free navigation.
