El Matto di mare is loosely translated 'tzeezotje', after the name of the Bistro on the square.
The sculpture was made by artist Dirk Michiels and depicts three cods.
When the fishermen used to catch a large cod, they called it a 'zwien' (a pig). The fish was sold in this square and that is why it was called the 'zwieneplein' (pig square).
It was the owner of 'tzeezotje', who is a good friend of Dirk Michiels, who came up with the idea of organizing a three-day fishing festival on the square. As a lasting memory, it was decided to install a work of art on the square.
