Reutelbos

Description

This private forest is called the Reutelbos. It is located in a valley and is special because it has remained untouched since the war. Remnants of bunkers and craters are still present here. Today, it is managed as a nature reserve.

During the winter of 1914-‘15, French and German troops were positioned less than 40 meters apart. After the German takeover, the Flandern I position was established at the current southwestern edge of the forest. It was captured by the British 21st division on October 4, 1917. A captured bunker was set up as the headquarters of the company. After some skirmishes, the hamlet of ‘Reutel’ was taken. Beyond that intersection, no further progress was made. The sector was defended during the winter by New Zealand troops.
