The Jesuit order chose Mechelen to found their Dutch-speaking novitiate and settled in what is now the Keizerstraat around 1611.
A new baroque church was built there (1670-1677) based on a design by Antonius Losson. The upper part of the pediment was completed in 1709. Both the facade and the interior are largely dedicated to Saint Francis Xavier . The interior is a combination of a Gothic-inspired hall church and Baroque ornamentation.
After the dissolution of the order in 1773, the church became the parish church of Sint-Pieter-en-Paul.
