The Brusselpoort is an impressive and massive 13th-century building located right in the middle of Mechelen's ring road.
The old city gate is the tallest of the twelve gates that were built as the city wall. Therefore, the gate was originally called "Overste Poort". Another gate was also built at this time, the "Brusselse Poort" . When the old Brusselse Poort was demolished and the Nieuwe Steenweg in Brussels reached Mechelen, it was decided to rename it 'Overste Poort'.
The Brusselpoort is the only one that still exists in Mechelen. Unfortunately, the iron gate was already demolished in the 18th century.
Brusselpoort served as a police station , later as a meeting room and art studio of the well-known artist Alfred Ost. For a short time, the Brusselpoort was used as a municipal museum under the wing of the Municipal Museums of Mechelen.
