The Wannenlappersbos is the name for the small municipal (play) forest in the district of Zingem. The total area covers 4.8 hectares.
The name Wannenlappers refers to the cultural and historical past of this region. Until recently, there was also a private museum in Zingem. It was Adelain Goedefroot who passionately kept the history of the wannelappers from Zingem alive. In the attached recording (autumn 2022), Adelain explains once again what a wannelapper is. Zingem is known for its wannenmakers and wannenlappers. Willow twigs were used to make "wannen": flat baskets to separate the chaff from the grain. Someone who repaired these wannen was called a "wannenlapper".
The wannenlappers traversed all of Flanders and upon their return were celebrated extensively. This gave rise to the tradition of the Wannenlapperskermis. The giant "Wannes Laps" is the only existing giant fully woven from reeds.
