The chapel was founded by Jean Baptiste Vandesande from Everbeken, Marcelin Roeland and a son of the Bienvenu family. They defeated the Russian army with Napoleon Bonaparte's troops in 1812, but the Russian campaign ended in cold, hunger and desperation. The three horsemen from Everbeek promised to build a chapel if they made it home in one piece; a fourth man from Everbeke was killed. In 1813, as promised, a chapel was built on a country road near the Breedstraat in Everbeek in honour of Our Lady of Peace (Notre Dame de la Paix), popularly known as 'Pijkskapel'. All that remains of the chapel (consecrated in 1815) is the floor and the wall with a yew tree. The three soldiers each planted a yew tree around the chapel. In 1898 a wall was built around the chapel. In 1953, part of the roof collapsed and the statue of Our Lady disappeared. The chapel was in ruins by the late 1950s. Two of the three yew trees that were a nuisance to agriculture were cut down. In 2015, the floor of the chapel was uncovered and the perimeter wall was restored. In 2017, a monument to Peter Jacquemyn[1] was unveiled at the former chapel.
