‘The Fat One of Sesjans’, a bronze horse, stabled on the verge of the farm where he once reigned. The artwork is by Jan Desmarets. ‘The Fat One’ was in real life a breeding stallion and as such one of the forefathers of what would later become the Belgian draft horse. Charles-Louis Matthijs (1796-1890) settled here as a farmer and stallion keeper and was already active in horse breeding by 1842. His most famous horse -not yet recorded in the studbook- was Jan, the fat one of Matthijs or from Hemelveerdegem or … the Fat One of Sesjans (a corruption of Saint John). Now he suspiciously watches over his farm, with his backside towards the public. The restored farm is now … a horse boarding facility.
