This headstock2 belongs to the old coal mine of Eisden . It was in operation from the 1920s until its closure in 1987.
This headstock, one of the few in concrete, has been restored. It is the air inlet shaft ; the other, also called the queen shaft because Queen Elisabeth visited it in 1922, is the air vent shaft. These shafts, which are at least 30 meters apart for safety reasons , are called retracting and extending shafts respectively. Both shafts are connected at a depth of 590 meters . They are 90 meters apart.
The shaft is 812 meters deep , but there were still sloping galleries to more than 900 meters.
The shaft trestle can be accessed up to a height of 24 metres.
