The rood loft (also called ambo) separates the transept dedicated to the faithful from the choir reserved for the canons.
It was built in Renaissance style from 1572.
Tournai Cathedral has been dedicated to Notre-Dame for almost 850 years. There are many images of Mary in the cathedral. Some have disappeared over time, such as Notre-Dame au raisin, which would have stood above the Porte Mantille (on the side of Place Paul-Emile Janson), but several still remain.
Above the central vault of the rood screen is a statue of the Virgin and Child , patroness of the Chapter of the cathedral, with the statues of Saint Piat and Saint Eleuthère on either side. All three are made of alabaster.
