The first Jesuit college in Tournai was founded in 1562 . The Jesuits left in 1773 when the Society of Jesus was dissolved . In 1839 a new college was opened , called Collège Notre-Dame. This church belongs to this college.
The foundation stone of the church – in neo-Byzantine style – was laid in October 1849 . In 1853 the new buildings were completed and the church was consecrated by the Bishop of Tournai.
In 1873, an extra wing was built for professional courses. In 1887 the church was enlarged, the vault of the central nave was raised and a bay was added to the length of the building. The choir was also rebuilt and enlarged.
