The Second World War wreaked havoc in Ostend. Right at the beginning of the occupation, in May 1940, the Nazis used an incendiary bomb to reduce the old town hall to ashes. The master plan by architect and urban planner Jean-Jules Eggericx envisioned new construction on the site where a third harbor dock used to be.
Architect Victor Bourgeois made a name for himself in the interwar period as a designer of various garden neighborhoods and public buildings in Brussels and Wallonia, always in the sleek modernist style of that time. Here, between 1956 and 1961, he built a functional town hall with a concrete skeleton and steel windows that has since become an inseparable part of the city's landscape.
Be sure to take a look at the side wall of the eastern wing (at the Mercator dock), where a large mural of the proud Ostender Arno was installed in 2020.
