The banks of the Scheldt have been transformed into a pleasant place for pedestrians and cyclists.
Along the water you can admire the listed facades , the remarkable trees, the bridges, and of course the Scheldt itself. But you can also stop there, relax on a bench or in an alcove on the Quai des Salines , or on a terrace of the numerous cafés on the quay of the Quai Marché au Poisson . The quays are also a meeting place for many festivities.
The ideal place to stroll along the water...
The current course of the Scheldt, with its perpendicular, steep banks and metal bridges, only dates from the 18th century. Before the works that Louis XIV had carried out from 1684 onwards, the Scheldt was very wide and the houses were close to the water.
In 2011, the Quai des Salines was renovated with the construction of new roads, organized parking spaces, a new RAVeL made of blue stone slabs and a wooden promenade. These works extended over a length of approximately 500 meters between the Pont de Fer and the Pont des Trous along the Scheldt.
