The young Hubert Malfait (1898-1971) receives good advice as an aspiring artist from Emile Claus (who was a regular at Malfait's father's café in Astene). Claus encourages Malfait to work in nature, and Malfait shows him his first paintings. Later, Malfait will develop as an expressionist. “The gendarmes” approach from the village to the intersection with the main road between Ghent and Kortrijk. Almost visionary, they look across the road towards the current “Malfaitplein.”
