The cultivation of flax was located along the Leie between Petegem-Deinze and Wervik, and in the Mandel valley. The root quality of the Leie water was excellent, and the flax from the Leie region was known as the best in the world. Consequently, the Leie earned its nickname “The golden river.” Due to pollution and odor nuisance, retting in the river was phased out and moved to retting facilities. Nowadays, especially in France, flax is usually retted in the field (dew retting).
