In 1946, a bilateral agreement was signed between the Belgian and Italian governments. The Italians promised to make an effort to send 2,000 workers per week to Belgium . The Belgians promised to give them housing and food that corresponded to their habits.
In La Louvière, there is the famous Italian Canteen, built in 1947 by the Gustave Boël factories. It welcomed Italian workers who came to work in the region's mines and steel industry.
Today it houses a brasserie, a museum about Italian migration and boat rental .
