The reservation of l'Escaille, crossed by the Orneau, is located 600m from the center of Gembloux, along the N4. In the 1960s, several dozen hectares of decanters from the sugar factory attracted a rich and diverse avifauna. In 1987, 5ha were transformed into a protected area. This Natagora reserve has become an important conservatory for species of plants, fungi, insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, birds,... . On the site are the ruins of the hydraulic mill of the abbey and a main pond, an old decanter from the sugar factory. The main interest is ornithological. Many species of birds are recorded there, including migratory species. An observatory has also been set up there.
This site owes its name to its schistous subsoil that has been subject to extraction of slate "scales".
This lovely walk allows you to discover it from the center of Gembloux.
