The Place Vauban, the central square of the Ville-Haute, with the town hall, the basilica, and the red hospitality institution La Maison des 8 heures, was thoroughly renovated last year. The adjacent Place du Manège for the Palais des Beaux Arts was even radically reimagined by landscape architect Bas Smets. In the city's redesign, the Bureau Bouwmeester, led by city architect Georgios Maillis, plays a crucial role. For the first time in decades, there is a coherent vision for architecture, urban development, and the arrangement of public space. What connects all the projects is that they are stylish, modest, and clear, free from the desire for spectacle and loud city marketing. Additionally, the Bureau Bouwmeester collaborates remarkably often with architects from the northern part of the country.
