Chapel at the Stone Cross: Faith against fever
A crucifix has stood at this location since the 16th century, possibly on an ancient cult site. Its bluestone base is still present.
In 1925, the current hexagonal chapel was built, as a successor to an older one that is already visible on 19th-century maps.
Above the entrance is carved: “1524 Honor Christ cross – You have peace in your house – 1925.”
The chapel was long a pilgrimage site against fever. Believers prayed there, tied red ribbons around the Christ figure, and blessed the sick with holy water – a ritual known as “binding the fever.”
The nearby Holy Cross Church (1935) was dedicated to this chapel.
