The cave was inhabited in the late prehistoric period , between approximately 12,000 and 17,000 BC , by hunter-gatherers from the Magdalenian culture .
It is a large limestone cave approximately 20 m long, 6 m wide and 12 m high — an impressive natural space formed by erosion of the Lesse.
Archaeological finds include flint tools, animal and human bone remains.
The name refers to the Nutons , small creatures from Ardennes folklore, believed to be found in caves. They are compared to small earth spirits or wood nymphs. They would help with crafts at night in exchange for food.
